Teatro La Fenice
Venice, Italy's historic opera house is called Teatro La Fenice. It is among the most well-known and iconic locations in the tales of both opera and Italian theatre history. La Fenice had numerous well-known operatic premieres, particularly in the 19th century, where pieces by several of the four composers bel canto era composers—Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti, and Verdi—were performed.
Its name alludes to its role in enabling an opera company to "rise from the ashes" in spite of losing three theatres to fire: the first occurred in 1774, following the destruction of the city's premier house, which was rebuilt but did not reopen until 1792; the second occurred in 1836, but the reconstruction was finished in the same year. The home was completely burned in the third fire, which was started by arson, in 1996, leaving only the outer walls standing. It was reconstructed and reopened in November 2004. The Venice New Year's Concert tradition began as a way to commemorate this special event.
