The Teatro Real in Madrid is one of the world's most historic opera houses. Inaugurated in 1850, the opera house closed in 1925 and then re-opened in 1966. It closed again in 1988 and underwent a major refurbishment and re-opened in 1997 with a capacity of 1,746 seats. Today, the opera house is well known throughout the world for hosting its large production featuring leading international operatic artists and directors.
